Dr. Michael Horowitz is Board Certified in Neurological Surgery, Fellowship Trained in Endovascular Neurointerventional Surgery, and CAST Certified in Endovascular Neurosurgery. Aside from practicing all aspects of general neurosurgery (spine and cranial/brain), he has particular interests in vascular neurology, stroke, cranial nerve disorders, brain tumors, aneurysms, vascular malformations, epistaxis and hydrocephalus, movement disorders (MRI guided Focused Ultrasound Therapy) and stroke recovery therapy (Vivistim Vagal Nerve Stimulation).
Dr. Horowitz grew up on Long Island, New York. He graduated in 1984 with a Highest Honors BA from Williams College in Williamstown, MA and was granted his Medical Degree from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY in 1988. After completing a Neurological Surgery Residency at the University of Pittsburgh in 1994 under Dr. Peter Jannetta, he completed a three year Fellowship in Open Vascular/Neuroendovascular Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in 1996 under Dr. Phil Purdy and Dr. Duke Samson.
Dr. Horowitz is a member of First Coast Neurosurgery and operates at HCA Orange Park Medical Center in Orange Park, Florida. He also serves as the HCA Regional Director for Neurosciences. He previously spent six years at the Pennsylvania Brain and Spine Institute in Butler, Pennsylvania and 19 years at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA where he founded the system’s Neurosurgical Division of Endovascular Surgery in 1999. At the University of Pittsburgh, Michael was a Tenured Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology, served as Co-Director of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Director of Cranial Nerve Disorders, and for three years as Chief of Neurosurgery at Pittsburgh’s Presbyterian University Hospital. Before working in Pittsburgh, Dr. Horowitz was an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas working at Zale-Lipshy University Hospital, Dallas Children's Hospital, and Parkland Hospital.
In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Horowitz is heavily invested in academic pursuits. He has published 171 journal articles, over 40 book chapters, and has edited a text on Endovascular Neurosurgery. Michael has been granted over $3 million in National Institute of Health (NIH) funding, continues to have active NIH funding for aneurysm device development, and holds 19 United States and International Patents for devices that aim to improve the treatment of cerebral aneurysms, ischemic strokes, pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis. He is Chief Scientific Officer for Cerenetex, LLC, a company that is developing and testing headphones that non-invasively diagnosis intracranial and extracranial arterial occlusions, is a founding partner for Retriever, LLC which is developing and testing a device he invented and patented that helps safely remove blood clots from arteries and veins, is a founding partner for Ancure, which is developing novel bioactive coils that he invented and patented for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms and is Founder of HemaCycle, a company that has developed a patented device that filters and reinfuses autologous whole blood during surgical and endovascular procedures. Outside of work, Michael enjoys reading, cycling and back country hut alpine skiing/touring.

According to a CBS report, 20% of Neurosurgeons are sued each year with other published reports showing that almost 50% of Neurosurgeons face one lawsuit every five years while almost 25% face at least two lawsuits every 5 years.
As an attestation to Dr. Horowitz' abilities and quality of care, he has been involved in only one medico-legal dispute in his 26 years of practice. This lawsuit related to the signed informed consent paperwork and did not make any claims regarding poor surgical or medical care. The case was settled by the Malpractice Insurance Company.
Miguel Janssen recently received specialized treatment for a hemifacial spasm, a rare but serious nervous system condition in which the muscles of the face involuntarily twitch.
